Recycle all bottles, cans & plastic bottles with a refundable label & non-refundable glass bottles, cardboard & paper.  Please remove the lids, plastic containers need to be cleaned.  It would be much appreciated if recyclables are sorted.

Local Community Organisations appreciate donates of cans and bottles - check with your local organisation to see if they would like your items.

Printer Cartridges
RoxFM (Community Radio for Roxby Downs)

Everyone is encouraged and welcome to drop off their all-in-one toner cartridges, all inkjets, laser cartridges, toner bottles, drum kits, and fuser kits in at RoxFM for recycling.  There is also a drop off point outside the Roxby Downs Council.

Batteries
RoxFM in conjunction with the Roxby Downs Environment Forum are collecting used batteries for recycling.  All standard household and mobile phone batteries accepted.
RoxFM is open between 10.00 am and 5.00 pm Monday to Friday - drop your batteries into the station and put in the battery recycling box.

Mobile Phones
RoxFm in conjunction with the Roxby Downs Environmental Forum are collecting used mobile phones, mobile phone accessories including rechargers, batteries, headsets and phone covers.  These will be sent off to Mobile Musters Old Phones for Trees program, where a tree will be planted for every 1 kg collected.  Drop off your mobile and accessories at RoxFM or there is also a collection point outside the Roxby Downs Council for Mobiles and printer cartridges.

Reuse

Freecycle -  Freecycle is a initiative thought up by the Environment Forum to reduce the amount of good quality items going to land fill. The Monitor Newspaper has provided to the community a free spot located near the classifieds to advertise free unwanted items that the community can collect, named FREECYCLE. All you need to do is contact The Monitor on 8671 2683, list your item, and be sure to put your phone number. It is up to the person interested to arrange collection

Clean cardboard boxes, art supplies, fabric - St Barbara's Parish School, Roxby Downs Area School and Roxby Downs Kindergarten - items are used by the children for art and science. (no toilet rolls please - check with the schools about egg cartons).

Clean towels and blankets - the local vet - used for bedding for animals.

Garage Sale - have a garage sale, someone else may be able to reuse your items.  Garage Sales work well in Roxby Downs, it's easy for people to get to a few in a day.  The best way to set up for a sale is to get organised a few weeks before, have every thing well set up, priced marked, drop off a A5 size notice to Council, this will be put up in local community notice board in Richardson Place (please do not put up notices on Council infrastructure).

Clothing - hold onto clothing for another child or have a swap meet between Mums.

Op Shop - all donations of clean, reusable clothing, goods, furniture etc is accepted at:

Enter into Andamooka, drive along the main road, where the road goes into a Y near the Opal Hotel, take the left road, turn the first left, go up a little way and you will see on the right the Andamooka Op Shop.

Repurpose

Finding another purposes for an item can be one of the most environmentally, cost saving and all round smart things you can do. All manner of items can be repurposed - Furniture, clothing, kitchen items.

There are many ideas - have a go at searching repurposing on the net, there are hundreds of ideas.

The community's vision, as outlined in the Roxby Downs Community plan (2005), is that Roxby Downs be a model environmentally friendly town within innovative environmental initiatives in arid recovery and highly efficient management of waste, water and power.

Outback Smart

Outback Smart is a new initiative of the Roxby Downs Environment Forum promoting and encouraging sustainable living in Roxby Downs and the surrounding areas.Outback Smart is working to give people the skills, knowledge and confidence to make easy, practical changes to their homes and everyday lives to become more environmentally sustainable.

Outback Smart consists of the Energy Friends and Living Smart programs.

Energy Friends provides free home energy assessments to identify areas where householders can save power and water and reduce their costs. Living Smart is an award-winning six week environmental education program which will teach you how to live a more simple, healthy & sustainable lifestyle.

Outback Smart is a community partnership between BHP Billiton, the Roxby Downs Environment Forum and Conservation Volunteers Australia.

An annual event normally held in March of each year.  Residents are encouraged to come along and help clean up their community.
