Roxby Downs is a unique town located 92 km from the Stuart Highway, 265 km from Port Augusta and 571 km from Adelaide, Roxby Downs provides a pleasant stop-off on the way to the Oodnadatta Track and provides a welcoming detour off the Stuart Highway.
Built in the mid 1980s to support the nearby Olympic Dam mine, Roxby Downs, originally the name of the local station, is thriving township with a community of 4500 residents. This figure is projected to increase to 12000 by 2014.
Olympic Dam is located 12km from the township world's largest mine deposit of uranium oxide, copper, gold and silver: Olympic Dam, owned by BHP Billiton. As the Olympic Dam mine is the town's greatest attraction, BHP Billiton operates surface tours. What makes Roxby Downs even more unique considering its remote location is the demography. The town is predominately a young community with all recreation activities from swimming, golf, tennis, squash to lawn bowls, netball, cricket and football. The town also has range of public facilities including a police station, hospital, a TAFE college and a post office.
The town and surroundings regions offer many tours and attractions. One local attractive tour on offer is the Arid Recovery Reserve. This tag along night tour offers Roxby Downs's residents and visitors to the region alike to enjoy one of BHP Billiton funded reserves. The reserve has been established to eradicated rabbits, cats and foxes to make way for native animals including bilby, western barred bandicoot, burrowing bettong and sticknest rat.
